The brief:
Myth and Legends of Japan was a book written by F. Hadland Davis published in 1913. The book includes a collection of traditional Japanese folklore and art. The author wanted to bring unique cultural perspectives to Western Audiences; the book helped raise awareness for Japanese culture and history in the early 1900s.
Inspired by Japanese typography and design, I wanted to incorporate a minimalistic but highly sophisticated design elements throughout the redesign.
I redesigned the book to modernize both the typographic treatments and illustrations throughout the book. I used typographic skills to format a grid that would be used to organize both text and images throughout the book while making elements consistent. The grid was also used to show variety and surprise amongst both illustrations and text. I composed the book only using two Pantone Colors; these constraints forced me to innovate how to use and manipulate colors with an extensive body of text.
